The new Thor: Love and Thunder film has gained some serious steam since the trailer was released last month. With Thor’s peaceful, soul-searching retirement being interrupted, Jane Foster somehow wielding the infamous Mjolnir, and King Valkyrie coming in for the assist—there’s a shit ton to unpack here.

However, the biggest mystery is about Gorr the God Butcher, where he came from, and why he seeks to kill off all the gods. Before going into his character, it should be noted that Gorr the God Butcher is played by Christian Bale, which seems fitting… remember American Psycho?

In order to understand Gorr’s mission, it’s important to consider his past. Gorr was born on a treacherous, no-name planet, and endured an early life full of pain and suffering. Despite the death of his parents at an early age, Gorr still went through life raising a family of his own and teaching them the values that he had learned. However, the hardships of this no-name planet turned out to be too much, as an earthquake took the life of his pregnant girlfriend, Arra, and son, Agar.

Banished by the rest of his tribe, Gorr spends his days wandering in painful exile. It isn’t until Gorr himself witnesses the battle of two gods right in front of his eyes, where black power attracts the mighty sword of Amorphous to him, allowing him to deliver the final blow—and kill a god on the spot. Already living with the belief that no god had ever provided him with any chance for a prosperous life, Gorr the God Butcher has made it his mission to do exactly what anyone would expect him to do—butcher all the gods.

Armed with this new power, his mission is clear, and he’s put Thor right in his crosshairs. Even though Gorr now has a whole arsenal of powers like immortality, enhanced strength, speed, and torturing tendencies, he’s completely useless without his beloved sword.

But what does the return of Gorr the God Butcher mean for Thor, and the rest of MCU? Despite many failures throughout his time as a villain, ultimately Gorr can cast doubt upon Thor, as Thor is now left wondering if the gods are truly as noble as he’s been led to believe.

There are still a lot of questions about what to expect from Thor: Love and Thunder, but one thing’s for sure—this film will be a wild ride. With Thor coming out of his retirement, Gorr on a relentless streak to murder all gods, Jane Foster with new powers, and Zeus being played by a certified badass, Russell Crowe—the possibilities are truly endless.
