Sony Pictures just dropped a press release sharing that A.) we’re getting a third Spider-Man movie and B.) it’ll be produced by Marvel Studios, effectively pausing one of Hollywood’s most infamous breakups. There’s loads to speculate here, but what this almost certainly means is that the team behind the previous two wildly successful Spider-Man flicks will reunite for the third installment.
The statement also shared “Spider-Man will appear in a future Marvel Studios film,” but which one? Your guesses are as good as ours. For now, know that Marvel currently has 9 titles in development for the saga’s Phase 4 (including a Black Widow spinoff, a Dr. Strange sequel, and the finale to Guardians of the Galaxy) and Spidey could pop into any one of them, in theory. The currently-untitled Spider-Man sequel is set to release July 16, 2021 with writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers of Far from Home returning to pen the screenplay.
So what of Sony’s Spidey-verse? Still going strong, it seems. A sequel to Into the Spider-Verse as well as an all-female Spider-Verse spinoff are in the works. In this morning’s press release, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige called Spider-Man "the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes," teasing that "as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse, you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
